NBPHE Book Club – October 2026
The NBPHE Book Club brings together CPH and CDI certificants to explore timely ideas, challenge perspectives, and connect with colleagues across the public health profession. Our next selection takes on a particularly big question: What has public health made possible, and what will it take to build on that progress?
What We’re Reading
Our next selection is The Cure for Everything: The Epic Struggle for Public Health and a Radical Vision for Human Thriving by Michelle A. Williams, ScD.
Part history and part vision for the future, The Cure for Everything explores how public health transformed human life through advances against infectious disease, unsafe environments, early death, and other threats to population health. Williams tells that history through the people, movements, institutions, and infrastructure that helped make those advances possible while examining the inequities, political choices, and challenges that have limited progress along the way.
At its center is an idea familiar to public health professionals: health is shaped by far more than what happens in a doctor’s office. Clean air and water, safe communities, disease prevention, social conditions, public policy, science, and collective action all influence whether people have the opportunity to live healthy lives.
That makes The Cure for Everything an especially compelling choice for the NBPHE Book Club. It invites us not only to look back at public health’s accomplishments, but to consider what those lessons mean for the work ahead.
A Conversation for Public Health Professionals
What does it mean to create the conditions in which people can thrive? Why are some of public health’s greatest successes so easy to overlook? How can the field rebuild trust while continuing to confront inequity, emerging threats, and changing public needs?
Those are questions with no single answer, and that’s exactly what makes them good questions for the NBPHE Book Club.
CPH and CDI certificants bring experiences from across the public health workforce, and the Book Club creates a space to learn from those different perspectives. Participants can share what resonates with their own work, challenge one another’s thinking, and consider how the lessons of public health’s past can inform its future.
